1. General information
The subject and its expected results respond to the following approaches and objectives: To know the universal expression of art at a global level. To analyse the socio-economic factors and changes associated with thought in prehistoric times. To study the processes of mental development in prehistoric societies. To study the patterns of mobility, social networks or of contact in prehistory through artistic manifestations. To foster in the student a critical, analytical and synthetical spirit and, within the framework of an open debate on the interpretation of prehistoric art. To raise awareness about the social value of prehistoric art, its conservation and dissemination.
These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations (2030 Agenda (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/).

2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, students must demonstrate the following learning results:
Identify the main factors that define the thinking of prehistoric man and his social activities.
Critically interpret the complex prehistoric information provided by the archaeological record.
Understand the social and cultural value of rock art, being sensitive to the need to adequately manage its study, dissemination and protection as archaeological heritage.
Use the bibliographic, archival, computer and technical tools that allow access to historical information of the contents of this subject. .
Rigorously evaluate the various archaeological sources, classify them, date them and recognize their authenticity.
3. Syllabus
1. General concepts: chronological framework; concept of prehistoric art.
2. Palaeolithic Art: History of the discoveries; Large areas of distribution; Techniques and supports; Rock art and mobiliary art : Subject matter; Dating and chronology systems; Meaning; Other artistic manifestations.
3. Post-Palaeolithic arts: climatic transition and cultural adaptation; peninsular artistic cycles: Levantine, Macro schematic, Schematic, Megalithic.
4. Rock art as a global human manifestation, examples from around the world.
5. Documentation systems and study of prehistoric art.
6. Heritage and society: rock art as a heritage asset, legislation and dissemination.
4. Academic activities
The learning process designed for this course is based on the following: Theoretical master classes of the contents referred to in the program (classroom activity); Practical classes: viewing and commentary of audiovisual documents , readings of specific texts or commentary of images, practical laboratory work (experimentation with pigments), guest lectures by specialists in the field (classroom activity); Scheduled personalized tutorials to assist in the learning process of students through the supervision of their practices, readings and work. An external activity to visit rock art sites is foreseen (depending on budget availability).
5. Assessment system
First call.
Global assessment (according to the date set in the academic calendar). A single exam with questions related to the theoretical contents of the syllabus. The student may opt to 100% of the final grade. The test will consist of the development of different types of questions: topic about the contents seen in class (40%); short development questions: identification, classification and dating of artistic elements (40%); a practical section of image commentary (20%).
